In a lengthy, 5-page interview with Tom Barman and Stef Kamil Carlens, this week's paper issue of HUMO goes back to the early days of dEUS. Why now? Because this Friday, Worst Case Scenario, from the Tom/Stef/Rudy period, gets the deluxe treatment; because Zita Swoon are releasing a best-of album (To Play, To Dream, To Drift, An Anthology); because next week, Tom will be Stef's guest during several special Zita Swoon concerts (tickets still available for the AB one).

You can read excerpts from the interview on the HUMO website. It's all in Dutch, mind you.

Someone should translate it into English, cause it's frankly amazing to read all those stories about early-90's dEUS, 13 years after Stef left the band. There's stuff about why Stef (and Rudy, and Craig) left dEUS, how the band at first all lived together in Antwerp, how they coped with early success (and how very differently), ...

A must-read.

From dEUS.be:

Universal Music and Island Records will re-release dEUS’s Worst Case Scenario on December 4th 2009. The album will be released in a Deluxe version, consisting of two CD and a DVD.

The original version of Worst Case Scenario has been re-mastered in London at the Metropolis Studio under supervision of Tom Barman (front man of the band); this is CD1. The second CD includes their first EP Zea (very rare) and a collection of B-sides, unreleased live tracks and demos.

The DVD is a brand new documentary ('Time is the state of my jeans') about the making of the album + Unreleased live performances recorded in 1994 and 1995.

A 24 page booklet with liner notes packed with new information, pictures and other memorabilia and liners notes from Mark Paytress completes the Deluxe edition.

Some more news on the Worst Case Scenario-reissue. As mentioned before the reissue will have 2 cd's and a dvd. One cd will contain the remastered version of Worst Case Scenario, the other other one will contain the b-sides (including Zea) from that era.

The most interesting part will probably be the dvd. It contains live-footage, photographs, a VPRO-documentary about the album and the brandnew documentary Time Is The State Of My Jeans: The Making of Worst Case Scenario. The documentary not only tells the story of WCS, it also contains items where Brian Molko and Guy Garvey en Gary Lightbody tell about their WCS-experience.
The documentary was co-produced by digital tv-station Acht. The week before the release will be dEUS-week at Acht. They will broadcast the new documentary and a compilation of the two Pukkelpop-gigs that week.

Some reviews of Temple of a restless soul:

15 October 2009 at 20:33 posted by Bart Van Belle 0 Comments

Mixed feelings. That's what I have about Tempo of a restless soul, the Tom Barman-documentary that was screened for the first time wednesday evening at the Vooruit in Ghent.

Since it was the première almost everybody who was in the movie, was also at Vooruit. Tom, Stephane, Alan and Klaas (no Mauro), Christian Pierre, Tom's mother, Renaat Lambeets, Manu Riche, etcetera.

I didn't really know what to expect. To be honest, I was really looking forward to the movie, until I saw the trailer last week. It wasn't tempting at all. But it was only the trailer...

The prologue was rather original. Tom, his sister and his mother are discussing the documentary and his sister clearly isn't very happy with it (at that moment). The documentary itself gives us a nice view on the period between the release of Pocket Revolution and the gig at Werchter 2008. Since Manu Riche and Renaat Lambeets have recorded about 100 hours of material, they probably had a difficult job reducing it to about 90 minutes.

And probably that's the problem I have with Tempo of a restless soul. Ofcourse it offers us a nice view on life on the road. And ofcourse it's nice to see the little discussions about some errors played during Suds & Soda. But it's too fragmentaric. And we have to guess where and when the band is, since there are no indications of time and place in the movie. As a heavy dEUS-follower I was able to add that context myself, but I can imagine there's other people who can't.

Tom's bond with his mother is more or less the red thread of the movie, but again it lacks depth. Why is this bond so special? Since the working title was Portrait of a young man as an artist, I really was expecting a deeper glimpse into Tom's soul. A depth interview with Tom would ofcourse be a better way to discover that then the fly on the wall-style of filming.

The most intense part is probably the scene two days before the start of the recording sessions of Vantage Point where Alan turned out to be stoned as a monkey. At that moment we get to see Tom worried about Alan (as a friend), but also angry (as frontman) since Alan's timing is really bad. Alan was taken to rehab and they started the sessions with the songs where Alan is less important.

The big episodes of the last three years are all in the movie (first time at Vorst, touring the USA, 0110, Werchter 2008), but as a fan I'm still a little bit hungry. I would have been nice to see Tom's mother during the Vorst-gig. Or to see more of the preparation of 0110. And why isn't the Werchter-fireworks not shown? We see Tom talking about his plans during the final notes of Suds & Soda, but we don't get to see wether his plan came out.

The most interesting scenes for me were the dressing room scenes. The stress before the gig, the rituals before they get on stage, the exitement afterwards and the discussions about song X or Y being not that good as the other night. The backstage-meetings with fans and the frustration about a no smoking-sign in a dressing room in the USA.

I may sound a little negative, but that's probably because I really had high expectations. Don't be afraid to go and watch it if you get the chance. If you're a dEUS-fan you're definitely gonna enjoy it (and the demo-versions of songs in it). If you're no dEUS-fan you'll get a glimpse of the busy and energetic way of life of Tom and the band the past years. Let's hope some stuff from the 100 hours of recording material, finds its way to us through a dvd or the website.

There's a big article on the Tom Barman-documentary in De Standaard today. It gives some background on a couple of scenes. Most important thing may be the fact that apparently the movie is now called Tempo of a restless soul instead of Portrait Of A Young Man As An Artist.

The new title is taken from the lyrics of Slow.

I took the time to think about the Pukkelpop-gigs. Two days later I'm still amazed. Friday was my 40th dEUS-gig, so it's really hard comparing, but Pukkelpop 2009 was definitely unforgetable.

Yes, I was also hoping for more songs from W.C.S. (since it's 15 years old, I even dreamed of Rudy and Stef on stage). Yes, I agree, they did play merely the same songs as during the last tour. But was it cool or not? Seeing Karin Dreijer Anderson singing Slow, Hotellounge sung by Gary from Snow Patrol,...

I was really happy they really did play almost two different gigs. Only Pocket Revolution, Instant Street and Fell Off The Floor, Man were played on both nights. They also gave us three new songs. Dark Sets In was already played during the last tour, but I Gave Love and Paper Bones were brandnew. It are both midtempo songs that could have easily fit on Vantage Point.

The choir and Tijs (the extra guitar-player) really had some impact during a couple of songs. Tijs played the trompet during Turnpike and I Gave Love. Marjolein (the best looking part of the choir) nicely replaced Lies Lorquet during Eternal Woman and the rest of the choir was especially great during I Gave Love.

I've been thinking a lot about the best gig of the two. Friday was special with all the guest, but maybe Saturday was better. Difficult choice. And how about a dEUS-gig without Suds & Soda? Is it possible? It definitely is, Saturday's set was nicely balanced. And yes, they could have played it as a second encore, but then again: that version would not be half as good as the friday-version with De Jeugd Van Tegenwoordig.

On Saturday dEUS dropped their first bomb (Bad Timing) quite early in the set, while on Friday they waited until Turnpike. But then again, both gigs were merely equal. dEUS already played some unforgetable gigs at Pukkelpop and these two could be easily added to that list.

Tom and Mauro were interviewed by Studio Brussel saturday. You can watch the video here. They also talked a bit about the new album.

It will contain a couple of longer songs (The Ideal Crash-style) and they're trying to bring some jazzy feelings into the songs. Working with a backing choir has been a dream of Tom for a long time. They will probably work 6 more months on the album, but they'll only release it when it's 100% ok.

I just checked the two videos Vince recorded for the latest dEUS-podcast. I heard snippets of Dark Sets In and saw Tom and Mauro rehearsing another new song with the working title Piano Song.

I noticed only 200 people have seen the videos so far, so check them out please.

At the end of the Pop Poll-gig Tom shouted See you very, very soon. Will they announce some gigs in the near future. I've been checking Mauro's calendar and he will be touring with Creation 2009, a project by Wim Vandekeybus, from the end of april.

dEUS won 2 Belgian Music Industry Awards yesterday evening: Best rock and best album. A big disappointment since they were nominated 9 times. Milow was the big winner with 5 awards. Tom, Klaas and Mauro were present to receive the awards, but apparently they already had some champagne before the show.
